Happy despite less sunlight in autumn - That's how it works!

It will be autumn. The days are getting shorter and the mood cloudier. The gray weather already makes us tired at the beginning of the cooler season and robs us of energy. Sunlight is enormously important for the body and the mind. The human being becomes happier due to the sun exposure and more satisfied.

Why autumn makes us tired

When it gets dark, the body adjusts to a quiet sleep. It releases melatonin. As a result, we become calmer and more relaxed, focusing on a physical rest. Since most people stay indoors longer in autumn and winter and the sun shines less, we also get tired during the day.

The night also starts earlier and so we feel exhausted and tired much more often and faster than in summer or spring.

But what do we do in autumn and winter to escape a winter depression and be happy despite less daylight?

Happy despite less daylight - that's how it works!

  1. Take your lunch break for a walk in daylight. As a result, your body not only gets oxygen, but also vitamin D from the sun - whether it shines a little, a lot or not at all. Daylight is always good.
  2. Equip your desk with a daylight lamp. So you stay fit and cheerful even during work. A daylight lamp leads to the fact that your body releases serotonin and you feel more happy. Unlike melatonin, this will make you more alert.
  3. Pay attention to the intake of vitamin D. During a blood check up, you will find out your current vitamin D level, which is often lower in autumn and winter, but is always too low for about 30% of all Germans. So pay attention to foods that contain vitamin D (e.g. mushrooms) or add vitamin D to your diet as a dietary supplement. However, in order to optimally utilize vitamin D in the body, your body still needs daylight.
  4. Get together with friends and do what you like. Make yourself a warm tea, watch your favorite series, enjoy a great conversation or meet together outside. Quality time should not be neglected, especially in autumn.

So if you feel that the gloomy autumn mood is hitting you on your mind, then try out whether a little walk at lunch with friends or alone will help you. If you are not really happy despite the daylight lamp and vitamin D intake, you can also talk to friends, your doctor or your doctor at any time.

However, in most cases it is a classic autumn blues, which quickly passes again. You can find more tips for being happy and all about happiness, mindset and positive energy in our blog 'Ways to happiness'.
